New Licensing Association Formed; Officers/Directors Announced
Cleveland, Ohio -- The National Collegiate Licensing Association (NCLA) and the Association of Collegiate Licensing Administrators (ACLA) have announced they will consolidate to form the International Collegiate Licensing Association (ICLA). The change will be effective July 1, 2002. The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) will administer ICLA. This is the ninth association NACDA administers. The others are the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA), National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD), National Association of Athletics Compliance Coordinators (NAACC), College Athletic Business Management Association (CABMA), Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association, Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association, Division II Athletics Directors Association and the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA). ICLA is being created to synergize the field of intercollegiate licensing. It is a higher education association whose membership will be composed of licensing administrators from college bookstores, institutional business offices, intercollegiate athletics departments and conferences, university legal counsel and other areas associated with the collegiate licensing profession. "We are pleased NCLA and ACLA are joining forces to create a unified, cohesive entity for collegiate licensing," says Lee Workman, incoming president for ICLA and assistant athletics director at East Carolina University. "This move should provide the collegiate industry with a better opportunity to serve all collegiate licensing professionals and to enhance relationships on and off campuses for the benefit of all ICLA members in reaching their licensing goals." This Association's purpose is "to foster the highest possible professional and ethical standards, while providing licensing practitioners a broad range of professional advancement opportunities. Further, it is ICLA's mission to improve the overall understanding and effectiveness of institutional trademarks/tradenames and licensing, while upholding the ideals of higher education." In addition to Workman, elected to hold office in ICLA for 2002-03 were Rob Cleveland (Ohio State), 1st vice president; Ken Goldberg (Florida), 2nd vice president/treasurer; and Matt Dyste (Oregon), 3rd vice president/secretary. Judy Barnard (Oklahoma State) and Connie Palfy (Georgia Southern), the current NCLA and ACLA presidents, respectively, will serve ICLA as dual immediate past presidents. ICLA is currently working on its schedule of events, consolidation of papers from NCLA and ACLA and confirming services from NACDA. The group's officers will serve as a "Transition Team" over the next six months and will work with volunteers in areas such as logo development, marketing and certification. "NACDA is pleased to have the opportunity to manage ICLA and include the Association in the family of associations administered by NACDA," says NACDA Executive Director Mike Cleary. "The services provided by NACDA will aid ICLA in its growth, accomplishing its goals and those of its members." Founding members of the Board of Directors include Jim Earle (Pittsburgh), John Fairman (Kansas State), Linda Gilbert (Missouri), Ron Hamilton (Southern Mississippi), Terry Livermore (Michigan State), Denise Person (Montana), Chris Prindiville (Miami [Fla.]), Steve Rich (Eastern Illinois) and Cindy Van Matre (Wisconsin). Services provided by NACDA are membership functions including member solicitation and dues payments, meeting planning, production of the Association's newsletter and general administrative duties. Additional Association details can be found on the NACDA web site at www.nacda.com. NACDA is in its 37th year and serves as the professional and educational association for more than 6,150 college athletics directors, associates, assistants and conference commissioners at more than 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Through its series of management seminars, clinics and workshops and publication of the bi-monthly magazine Athletics Administration, NACDA offers educational opportunities to its members. More than 1,200 athletics administrators annually attend the NACDA Convention. NACDA also owns the two preseason football games, the Kickoff and Pigskin Classics. Additionally, NACDA operates the Sears Directors' Cup program, which honors the all-sports champion in each of the NCAA Divisions -- I, II and III -- and the NAIA, for a total of four trophies.
